I am known by many names – JT, BIGsheep, occasionally even James – but during my time at work I have somehow earned the tag of Trophy Thomas. This may have something to do with my overly competitive nature and my magpie-esque love for anything shiny and cup-like, but who’s to say.
Whatever the truth, one of my boyhood dreams came true at Memorabilia yesterday as I got to lift the FA Cup: the greatest trophy of them all. Given Spurs’ attachment to the competition over the years I almost wet myself at the chance to hold it aloft, shunning the more disappointing European Cup standing right to its side.
Just look at that grin; I could not have been happier.
With the exception that my blue had faded for the show, that really was the highlight for me and possibly the best money I’ve ever spent in my life; the only thing that could top that for me would be actually walking out at White Hart Lane wearing Lillywhite.

Thats a damn fine trophy you got the sir…
What happened to your hair? That doesn’t look blue at all! (or green or purple for that matter)
I get the impression that you enjoyed yourself yesterday. As you say pity you did not have the blue hair to go with the cup.
It was a week too early for my hair appointment! I’ll have to try my skills at Photoshop.
You think that’s a good pic? You haven’t even got one stormtrooper beating you up!
You need to send me a copy of that one.
A photograph of me when I was 15 in a Man Utd shirt holding the FA and European cup may or may not exist somewhere…. shortly before I woke up and ditched the glory-hunting second team for my lifelong Cardiff City pain.
The Euro cup is a little weird though isn’t it? It’s too plain for my liking. Big though.
Funny, I can only imagine a shorter version of you, still with facial hair, in that photo. I know what you mean, though, as I’ve always thought the UEFA Cup looks fancier.
Still, it’s all down to sentimentality; afterall, Spurs have never got near the European Cup whereas the FA Cup just make me go watery eyed.
Edit: sorry, jim, you got marked as spam for some reason. I was “in between blue”, but don’t worry as it’s back now ;)
